Good Shochu Under $20
/Do you like to drink alcohol? If so, what kind of alcoholic beverage do you like? Me? I like beer, Shochu, sake, and wine. I used like sake with Japanese food but lately, I like Shochu more than sake. Shochu is a Japanese distilled beverage. Unlike many other beverages, It is made from one of several raw materials. Typically Shochu is distilled from barley, sweet potatoes, buckwheat, or rice. It can also be made from more obscure materials like chestnuts, green tea, sugar cane, or carrots. And each of these raw materials gives a very very distinct flavor and aroma. Usually Rice Shochu is smooth and light. and Potato Shochu is earthy and strong. The alcoholic content is usually 25% although sometimes it can be as high as 42% or more. Today, I'd like to share my favorite Shochu you can buy under $20 in NYC. I usually go to Astor Wine to buy Shochu, but it can be found in many liquor stores through the City.

This is the best! I love this Shochu. I don't remember how many bottles of this I have bought in my life. This Shochu is made from sugar cane and is light and smooth on the palate. I'm still a Shochu beginner so I prefer the more smooth and light ones. If you never tried Shochu before, I recommend to try a Shochu like this one.

I like this one for everyday Shochu. This Shochu is smooth and clean, and is very easy to drink. Made from barley, this Shochu can make a special harmony with Japanese dishes like grilled fish. I also recommend this Shochu for people who are trying it for the first time.
この焼酎は、飽きない。飲みやすい。価格も毎日の晩酌にちょうどいい。という優れもの。麦焼酎やけど、臭みがなくスムースで飲みやすい。そして、焼き魚のような和食にとっても良く合う。焼酎は、香りがキツくって飲みにくと思って飲まず嫌いな方におすすめです。
How to drink Shochu? I enjoy it on the rocks with lemon the best. But, in winter time, you should try with a mix with hot water and lemon or umeboshi ( pickled plum ) in the Shochu. It will bring great harmony with Japanese dishes.
日本人のみんなは、焼酎の飲み方は、説明しなくても、知っている方がほとんどやと思うけど、アメリカでは、焼酎を知らない人も多いし、それをどうして飲めば美味しいのかを、ここで紹介したんやけど、私は、シンプルに、焼酎オンザロックにレモンが一番好き。でも、寒い時期には、焼酎お湯割りレモンや、梅干しが、毎日の和食ご飯のいいお供になってます。
